Susan decided to move out of her parents’ house and into an apartment. She wanted to live closer to her job.  Susan looked at many apartments.  She finally found one that she thought was perfect.  She looked at it when it was still filled with furniture.  She decided to rent the apartment.
The people who had been living in the apartment moved out.  They moved out their furniture and left ugly surprises behind.  They left all kinds of hidden dirt.  Susan couldn’t believe it.  She had no idea the apartment was so dirty.
Susan’s parents helped her clean the apartment.  They scrubbed food off the walls.  They mopped the floors and cleaned the windows.  When they took the shower curtain off, they saw the dirtiest bathtub ever.  Susan felt sick.  They scrubbed the tub.  It took three cans of cleanser.  But when it was done, Susan loved her nice, clean apartment.

Are you marketing a new product?  A good name can be the most important advertising tool.  But choosing a name can be a difficult job, especially in today’s global marketplace.  To avoid costly mistakes, get it right the first time.  Use International Naming, Inc. --- a company that specializes in creating the perfect name for you product.  We take several steps to make sure that your new product name will survive the competition of the international market.

 a. Our creative staff will think of 100 possible names for your product.  The names may include real words or invented ones.  Interestingly, many popular products have invented names, or made-up names.  Invented names can use parts of real words, but the name doesn’t mean anything.  An example is the allergy medication called Claritin.  Claritin is not a real word in English, but reminds us of the word “clear”. Claritin makes us think that the medicine will give us “clear” noses, so that we can breath easily.

b. After you have selected a name, our language staff will make sure the name does not have a negative meaning in another language.

c. We will get a trademark for the product name so that no other company in the world can use the name.  For example, McDonald’s does not allow any other company to use Mc in front of its name.  With a trademark, your product will never be confused with a product from another company.

In the United States, the average age of a college student used to be between eighteen and twenty-six years old.  Not any more.  Over the years, this has changed.  Now many colleges and universities boast a large number of non-traditional students.

Many of these non-traditional students are older than the traditional students. Senior citizens are joining the ranks of non-traditional students on campuses throughout the United States.  These non-traditional students frequently work during the day and go to school at night or on weekends.  They may have started college after they graduated from high school, but later, because of family or work responsibilities, had their education interrupted.

Traditional students benefit from having older students in their classes.  Senior citizens are excellent role models for some younger students who may not take college as seriously as they should.  Seniors attend college or the university, not because they have to, but because they want to.  Some senior citizens take individual courses only for personal enhancement and enrichment.  Others attend to fulfill their lifelong dream of earning college degrees.  Every year more and more grandparents are proud to wak across the stage to receive a college diploma.

It is not uncommon for employers in the United States to ask prospective employees to describe some of their accomplishments or successes.  Usually people respond by talking about their career accomplishments or other academic achievements.  However, there are other successes that are personal and can be considered to be very important.

When Mary was applying for a position as a teacher, the school principal asked her to describe a success or accomplishment. Mary thought about the question and considered a number of different accomplishments.  Some of the successes that came to mind were professional, others were personal.

Mary decided to describe the one success that she felt had required the most effort on her part.  She talked about the process of quitting smoking.  She explained that giving upo smoking required a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week commitment.  Mary went on to point out that she quit without the help of patches, drugs, or nicotine chewing gum.  Mary also did no t gain weight.

Mary concluded by listing the specific skills that she needed to be successful.  She described researching different methods of quitting: all at once versus gradually.  In addition, she needed planning, perseverance, and patience to achieve her goal.
